Athlete Project Tip 10 : Caffeine
In response to feelings of sleepiness and tiredness, athletes drink heavily caffeinated beverages such as coffee, energy drinks, and sodas. Although the caffeine may produce a temporary boost in alertness, the effects are not long lasting, and can cause a hang-over affect. In addition, the consumption of caffeinated beverages may result in dehydration and gastrointestinal discomfort which has undesirable effects on athletic performance. If athletes consume caffeine they should make sure it is not banned by their governing organization. Consumption of caffeinated beverages for enhanced athletic performance is not recommended.
